The ACLU seems to disapprove, but it is possible for a protest leader to be sued and face consequences for the unlawful behavior of their supporters, even during an election year.

In this instance, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal from the legal representatives of Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson, which included ACLU attorneys, to be held liable in a lawsuit filed by Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Police Officer John Ford, as reported by Reuters.
