This controversy arose following Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III's testimony before the U.S. Committee on House Administration in December. Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-OK) questioned Bunch about the Smithsonian's hosting of six "drag shows" in the past three years, alleging that the events exposed children to content deemed "overly sexual."

This scrutiny, coupled with reports of a "drag audit" and the cancellation of planned drag events, has raised concerns about censorship among Smithsonian staff, as per The Washington Post.
