On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima by the United States, leading to one of the deadliest and most devastating attacks in history. Within a mile radius of the blast, buildings were completely destroyed and the heat was so intense that it bleached the surfaces of objects, leaving behind shadowy imprints of anything that had been in the blast zone. This included human remains, clothing, and other debris, leaving behind eerie and haunting "nuclear shadows" on the walls and pavement where people had once stood or sat. Regina Kay Walters was a 14 year old girl who was murdered in 1990 by the Truck Stop Killer, Robert Ben Rhoades. Walters, a runaway, had been traveling with her boyfriend, Ricky Lee Jones, when Rhoades abducted them both. Rhoades killed Jones and kept Walters captive for a period of time, over which he tortured and assaulted her repeatedly. He took these photographs of the girl in an abandoned farmhouse where her body was found, shortly before he killed her. Rhoades had shaved her head, and forced her into an ill-fitting black dress and heels. The chilling photograph above is one of several taken of Regina, her eyes filled with fear and disgust and her once-flowing hair shorn into a disheveled mess, are a chilling testimony to the gruesome reality she faced.
