Control gates open for one of the largest natural freshwater lakes

The rising water levels in Utah's Great Salt Lake have been aided by the nearby Utah Lake, which reached full capacity in February.

Approximately 300 million gallons per day can be released when the floodgates are open. The increase in water levels at Utah Lake follows a record snowpack in 2023, as reported by ABC4 and NPR's Here & Now.

To manage the excess water, control gates had to be opened to allow the water to flow down the Jordan River towards the Great Salt Lake.
