The Amazon, known for its incredible biodiversity with around 3 million species residing beneath its lush tropical canopy, has traditionally been thought to have been devoid of large ancient civilizations due to its dense vegetation and challenging terrain.

However, recent research conducted by scientists from the French National Center for Scientific Research has unveiled the remains of an ancient city in the Upano Valley of eastern Ecuador, nestled along the foothills of the Andes.

Utilizing light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology to map an area spanning 115 square miles, the team uncovered evidence of a 2,500-year-old settlement known as Sangay, which may have housed a population of 10,000 to potentially 100,000 individuals at its peak.
