The two-seater coupe was the fastest production car of its time and appealed to the affluent buyer with a need for speed and a lust for performance vehicles. Max Hoffman of Mercedes got the idea for the 300SL as a way to offer the burgeoning post-war market with a Grand Prix-style car.
